Who we are

About Broodhuis Elzen

A place in the heart of Leuven that returns meaning to everyday bread — bakery, café, and a workshop table under one roof.

Built for the neighbourhood

Broodhuis Elzen grew from a simple wish: combine artisan sourdough, a welcoming café, and a small atelier where people can learn by touch. We chose Bondgenotenlaan so the bakehouse sits in daily life — not behind an industrial door.

Elzen — alder — is our nod to Flemish trees and rooted craft: sturdy, local, and patient.

Three passions

Bakery, café, atelier

Bakery

Sourdough bread and buttery croissants baked on site — the smell that opens the street each morning.

Café

Seasonal plates and Belgian coffee from morning into the afternoon — a neighbourhood table, not a rush counter.

Atelier

Workshop mornings for dough, shaping, and shared learning — creativity beside the ovens.

Hands behind the house

Broodhuis Elzen is led by baker Mira Vandenberghe with café host Thomas Peeters and atelier coordinator Elise Maes — three crafts sharing one oven room.

We bake for flavour and for impact: shorter supply chains, less waste, and a place that strengthens social ties around simple pleasures.

How we work

Local, slow, transparent

We buy grain from mills we can visit. We ferment longer so flour digests better and tastes deeper. We open the atelier so craft is not a secret behind glass.

Delicious, honest, good for the street — and good for the heart.

Inside: flour-dusted benches, elm-green accents, and shelves that fill as the bake progresses. Outside: a Leuven street façade that invites you in without spectacle.

Whether you come for a loaf, a croissant, or an atelier morning — you are welcome at the table.
