Warm timber bakery shelves with fresh loaves at dawn

Broodhuis Elzen

Bread, café, and a shared table

A neighbourhood bakery in Leuven — sourdough from local grain, buttery morning pastries, and an atelier open to slow craft.

Under one roof

What is Broodhuis Elzen?

We built this house for simple pleasures: good bread, a café that knows your name, and a workshop where flour meets craft.

Neighbourhood café

Open from morning into the afternoon — seasonal plates, Belgian coffee, and a place to linger on Bondgenotenlaan.

Our story
Why we bake

Returning to the grain

When the ovens light before Leuven wakes, the street is still quiet. Only timber shelves, warm flour, and the soft pull of dough greet us. In those hours the craft feels clearest: good bread needs people who take their time.

We believe in slow processes in a fast city. In local mills instead of anonymous sacks. In a bakery that strengthens the street around it.

That is why Broodhuis Elzen stands on Bondgenotenlaan — bakery-forward, café-warm, and open to the neighbourhood.
— Mira Vandenberghe, baker

Local & lasting

Flour from partners we know

We mill relationships before we mill dough — Flemish farms and regional mills who care as carefully as we do.

Grain grown near here tastes different: clearer crumb, deeper crust, bread that carries the season. We keep the chain short so flavour and soil stay close.

Sourdough at the centre

Our starter breathes. It asks for attention and patience. No shortcut replaces what a matured culture brings: depth, digestibility, a crust with character.

We accompany the dough rather than force it — the same way bakers before us learned to listen.

Morning pastry

Butter, layers, and early light

Beside the loaves: croissants, pain au chocolat, and seasonal tarts — laminated and filled with the same care as our bread.

Come early for the warmest trays. Stay for coffee at the timber counter.
